The Viaduct at Auckland waterfront. This is a
mechanical bridge that can be raised to allow passage into the basin to the fishing vessels which used it.
My
water engineer is so sweet, when I asked him is there is a special name
for the mechanical bridge, he found the following definition for me. In
fact the photos were taken by him.
A bascule bridge (sometimes referred to as a drawbridge)
is a moveable bridge with a counterweight that
continuously balances the span, or "leaf," throughout the
entire upward swing in providing clearance for boat traffic.
